“Houston, we have lift-off!” These words symbolize more than technological achievement—they echo a deeply human impulse towards discovery. Watching the launch and recovery phases of ARTEMIS mission evokes a shared sense of awe and collective identity. We stand, as always, on the shoulders of giants—echoing the Apollo era’s leap “into infinity and beyond.”
But in the midst of this triumph, a remark made caused a lingering sadness in me….. ”Space-race exists because there is little left to explore on Earth”. Why sadness, I thought? Because humans thrive on exploration, novelty and discovery! We all need unchartered frontiers for our brains to tick with excitement! Fortunately, I was quick to realize that this sentiment is wrong. There is much to do!!
The Uncharted Frontier Within: Exploration is not limited to geography. While space extends outward, another vast frontier exists inward. The human brain – mapped through EEG, qEEG, spectrograms, fMRI etc. – remains one of the most complex and least understood systems known. Just as Artemis builds upon Apollo, neuroscience builds upon pioneers like Berger, expanding our capacity to observe and interpret neural and / or cosmic dynamics.
“Houston, we have liftoff” is not only about rockets leaving Earth—it is also about inquiry launching into the depths of human physiology, quantum physics, human consciousness right here on earth. And just maybe, discovering quantum links between Earth and Cosmos.
Networks Across Scales: Brain and Cosmos: The analogy explored in Beyond Metaphor (link attached) links the brain and the universe in their intricate working through hubs, nodes, and interconnected pathways. Neural networks self-organize through local interactions, while the cosmic web forms through gravitational clustering.
Disruptions in neural pathways may be associated with psychopathology and chaos, while disruptions in cosmic structures influence galactic interactions and other forms of chaotic disorganization. While these parallels remain metaphorical rather than literal equivalences, we have formed an understanding that there is much to explore in the way these 2 systems share organizing principles—energy efficiency, connectivity, quantum biology and -physics and energy distribution.
Quantum Foundations: Both neural- and cosmic systems at their core, arise from physical processes that may ultimately trace back to quantum-level interactions. How order emerges from chaos—whether in synaptic networks or galactic filaments—remains an open scientific question.
These questions amplify our curiosity. The similarities across scales invite deeper inquiry: Are these patterns inevitable outcomes of physical laws? Or do they reflect universal constraints on complex systems?
Multidisciplinary Synergy: Answering such questions will not come from a single discipline. It will require monumental coordination – neuroscientists and -psychologists, quantum-physicists / biologists, mathematicians, astro-physicists and philosophers working in synergy. This convergence is not a limitation; it is an opportunity. It drives our human need for novelty. What exciting times are yet to come!
“Houston we have lift off!” may now have a totally different meaning, right here on earth as forces start to unite their expertise! Take the time to watch this video, you may already be part of cosmic exploration with your feet firmly planted on Mother Earth!
